Story of The Seed - The Conclusion

INTRODUCTION

Soon after we planted our Brassica plants in the garden, they were eaten... by the chickens. More info on our investigation, experiment, and how we planned on catching our culprits are in blog post below.

HYPOTHESIS

Our hypothesis was correct.Chickens escaped from their afternoon corral and ate our whole cabbages.

Independent variable: Number of pecks per second (how long it took to eat it)

Dependent variable: Number of plants stolen by chickens

Justification of hypothesis: It's inevitable that the chickens were going to steal out plants. We said that they ate our brassica plants during there afternoon outing, and we were correct.

For our experiment on the first afternoon when the chickens were let out we had our  cabbages. With the first cabbage we had peeled off the leaves and put them all on the ground and we timed it. It took 4 minutes and 47 seconds for the chickens to eat all of the cabbage leaves. The next afternoon we brought a whole cabbage and put it on the ground. The chickens took 5 minutes and 34 seconds to eat the entire cabbage. We believe it took the chickens longer because the cabbage wasn’t opened up like the last one.  On the last afternoon we had half buried the cabbage in the dirt to replicate a cabbage growing. The chickens took 5 minutes and 12 seconds to eat the entire cabbage.

Purpose of the project: The purpose for our project was to work our way to finding out what happened to our teams brassica plants, which we did discover and proved our hypothesis.

Conclusion// Summary: To conclude The Story of The Seed experiment, our hypothesis was correct. Chickens did eat and steal our plants. After examining and analyzing the chickens afternoons out and they're eating habits, we've come to the conclusion that the chickens, did in fact take our brassica plants, concluding the mystery of our stolen cabbage.

What Happened to Our Cabbage?

EVIDENCE

All that is left here is the roots of our plants. We know based on evidence from Mr. Bursch that chickens must have eaten our plants because everyday the chickens are let out of their coop, and some roam out and they love the garden. They roam for up to an hour a day, which gives them enough time to attack our brassica plants.

HYPOTHESIS

We clearly think that a chicken took our plants. Our independent variable would be the number of pecks per seconds which we will make testable in our experiment. Our dependent variable is the number of plants stolen by chickens.

LAB INVESTIGATION// EXPERIMENT

We plan on investigating the chickens by recording what they do when they are freed in the afternoon, and see how they react to eating parts of our plant.

we plan on using:
-sample cups
-paper for recording
-stopwatch
-cabbage/cabbage plant
-chickens

Jordan Sabalsa: Bio

Hi my name is Jordan. I was born in Stockton and lived there for less than a year then moved to Manteca and lived there for about 1 year and 1/2 or 2 then moved to San Jose where I mostly grew up. I went to two middle schools and now I am enjoying WGHS.

At my elementary school it was a science magnet school called Hacienda. We had science class with all these cool animals and we also had this huge outdoors area. Our science teacher would take us out to the garden and help us grow vegetables, fruits and plants. Some things I remember growing is flowers strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes etc.  The relationship I had with my teacher was that he was one of the best science teachers I've had, Mr. Keedy.

Shelby Cortez: Bio

Hi, my name is Shelby Cortez I have lived in San Jose, California all my life. The only experience I've had with gardening is helping my mom plant in our backyard and front yard, and also helping tend to our citrus trees. My mom is the most influential person in my life that has worked with gardening. On the weekends, she spends most of her time gardening and goes to Orchard Supply and Home Depot to get new plants regularly. I've learned a lot from her in the aspect that I've developed a good sense of tending to plants and food. When I was little I spent a lot of time in our side garden and growing little plants by the side while my mom would work with our citrus trees. Being outside in our garden and helping my mom with our plants was something that was really significant in my childhood and it's something I will always rememeber.

Ashley Sanchez: Bio

Hi my name is Ashley Sanchez. I'm from San Jose, California. I'm athletic and the worst cook, but i know how to make a great sandwich with fresh avocados from my grandparent's backyard. My whole life I have grown up with boys. I sort of became a tomboy in a dress with sneakers. I am quiet the entertainer, dancing and singing in the aisles at Home Depot. My whole life trees have been something that I always appreciated. Whenever I see a tree I always see how beautiful it is. Some trees have great thick branches that you can climb, others provide cool shade, and some even bless you with fresh fruit.

I actually have had grown plants before. I remember growing tomatoes in my grandparents house. And also right now I'm growing Malagueta chilli peppers in my grandparents garden. My grandpa knows a lot about gardening because he a landscaper. He always grows flowers, chilli peppers, avocados, lemons, and herbs. I always make fun of him because in a little napkin he puts 6 chilli peppers in his pocket to take wherever he goes because the food is never too hot for him.
